The purpose of learning sight words is for children to recognize them instantly while they’re reading. Once all groups have been established, I plan out my instruction each week. A good goal is to learn 220 or more sight words by the end of 2nd grade. With the really early levels, it's easier to group 3 consecutive levels together because the kids are more independent at those levels and it's much easier to differentiate within the group. For example, I might put my level B kids with my level C kids. Sight Words for first graders are the most common words that children come across. I group my kids who are close in level together. This can be really difficult at the start of the year, when you have 8 different groups of levels. We’ve included easy-cut lines for simple prep work, and each grade level has a different color border for simple sorting.
